Youth Ministry

Blacknall has an active middle school and high school youth ministry. Click here to view their site.

College Ministries

Blacknall’s location on the west edge of Duke’s East Campus means that many professors, administrators, staff, graduate students, and, yes, undergraduates make this their church home. Blacknall gladly welcomes the opportunity to minister to and be ministered by the undergraduates. It is our desire for students to become active participants in the body of Christ here at Blacknall. Blacknall’s college class meets every Sunday at 9:45 am in the parlor for breakfast, prayer, and the study of God’s Word. Worship is at 8:30am and 11am. Throughout the academic year there are several planned fellowship events. Also, we offer for students to be “adopted” by a Blacknall family.

For more information please contact: Elizabeth Eichling .

Music Ministry

Adult Choir

Blacknall’s choir shares in worship on Sunday mornings using a wide variety of musical styles. Rehearsals are held on Wed. evenings at 7:30 p.m. The choir is always open for new members; choir members need not be soloist-quality singers. Opportunities are available for special occasions and seasonal participation. If interested, contact Dave at the church office.

Other Music Opportunities

We believe in using a variety of musical styles to worship the Lord. There are opportunities you, whatever the instrument—we’ve even used harmonica! Contemporary or classical vocals, percussion, strings, brass, woodwind, keyboard—all are welcome, from middle-schoolers on up. Contact Dave at the church office.

Bible Study and Fellowship

Small Groups

The motivation to set up “small groups” comes from the biblical mandate to “be members one of another.” Many people have found that the opportunity to meet weekly with a small group for prayer and Bible study in someone’s home has significantly deepened their sense of community within the larger congregation. It’s a great way to meet and make friends and a great place for learning. Groups typically begin a new year together in September, but if you are new to the church or want to be a part of a small group for the first time, we would love to have you participate! If you would like to be included, or have any questions, see the small groups website or email smallgroups@blacknallpres.org. “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” -John 13:35

Women’s Bible Study

Women of all ages are invited to participate in Blacknall’s Women’s Bible Study, offered Thursday mornings (9:15-11:30am). Provides opportunities for prayer, small groups, and fellowship. Child care is provided. http://womenatblacknall.wordpress.com/bible-study-3/

Men’s Midweek

A.k.a. the “Early Christians,” meets each Wednesday at 6:45 a.m. for prayer, Bible study, and fellowship, with coffee and donuts. For more information call the church office, 286-5586. Alternatively, you can just show up and see for yourself what’s going on.

Prayer Opportunities

Tuesday Morning Intercessory Prayer Group

This prayer group was formed primarily to pray for the people of Blacknall. This small group of dedicated intercessors include in their prayers any requests called into the church office or communicated to any of the members. They also pray for friends and family.  Confidentiality is respected and practiced.  Lists of all those prayed for are maintained and praise reports recorded.  Cards of encouragement are sent, as well as those of sympathy, get well, etc., with notes written in the cards by those attending the meeting that day. Pastors Allan Poole and David Dunderdale are sent the list via email. Margaret Frothingham shares this list with the Congregational Care Committee. Any prayer needs may be called into the church office  (919-286-5586) or passed on to Jan Smart (jsmart@blacknallpres.org).

Thursday Morning Prayers for Renewal

The purpose of this meeting is to pray as the Holy Spirit leads for one hour from 8:00 to 9:00 am every Thursday morning in the Blacknall sanctuary. The prayers of this group center around the body of believers at Blacknall Church and its ministries, as well as Blacknall missionaries. This group of pray-ers seeks to support the work of the Church. Prayer needs are not discussed—prayers are simply offered by individuals as they are led. There is often a period of worship and perhaps a song or two. This is an open meeting for anyone to come either just periodically or on a regular basis.

Following the meeting the group usually goes over to Whole Foods for breakfast or coffee. The prayer meeting has been continuing for about 15 years. For more information contact Jack or Gloria Simonds (jack.simonds@verizon.netgloria.simonds@verizon.net or 919-286-1111).

Sunday Evening Prayers for Healing

On the 3rd Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary, there is a service of Communion and Prayers for Healing. Anyone with a need for prayers may come and receive communion, join in a time of informal worship and, if desired, receive prayer and anointing with one of the pastors or elders.

After 11:00 am Worship Service Prayer Meeting

This group of intercessors meets each Sunday following the 11:00 am service in Allan Poole’s office. Their purpose is to lift up to our Heavenly Father the requests which have been written on the Prayer Request Cards found in the pew racks in the sanctuary and in the basket in the lobby.

Additionally, cards may be placed in the offering plate during the worship services, or passed to any Deacon on Duty or one of the pastors.. Any request may be asked to be held confidence. Each request is prayed for specifically and recorded in a notebook and kept there for a year. If you are interested in joining this group please contact Jim Carr (jleocarr@earthlink.net).

Monthly Prayer Meeting for Missionaries

The purpose of this monthly prayer meeting (2nd Sunday, 6:30 pm) is to pray specifically for the missionaries supported by Blacknall Church. Whether stationed in the states or abroad, they are all involved in the spread of the Gospel. As front-line soldiers of Christ, they face unique challenges, dangers, and opportunities. This group involves those who believe it a solemn responsibility to support and uphold our individual missionaries, their work, and their witness with intercessory prayers. If you are interested please contact Vincent Stubbs (vincentstubbs3@aol.com, or 919-596-1293).

Senior Citizens

We affectionately label our older brothers and sisters “L-C’s” (for “50-100″ years old). These folk gather with senior citizens of other churches each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., in the church parlor, for singing and Bible study under the leadership of Dave Stuntz. Lunch follows the morning events.

Sunday School – 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

We at Blacknall are firmly committed to excellence in leaming, both for children and adults. All curricula are rooted in a commitment to the full authority of the Bible for Christian faith and practice. Graded classes for children are conducted from two years of age through high school, while a nursery program takes care of infants and toddlers during Sunday School and Morning Worship. Classes meet at various locations on all three levels of the education building and in the basement of the Sanctuary. Directories are posted throughout the building. A College Class, Post College Fellowship, and several adult classes meet each Sunday and are organized topically.
